My Weird Design Trick: “Flip It”
AKA “𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗹𝗶𝗽-𝗩𝗶𝗲𝘄 𝗙𝗶𝘅”
Here’s what I mean:
On Sunday evening, I was staring at a digital menswear illustration I’d been working on.
Something felt off.
I couldn’t quite put my finger on it.
Proportions? Off.
Balance? Off.
Flow? Off.
Then I remembered an old painter’s trick I use: flip the canvas.
So, I flipped the image. And boom:
– The balance was a little off.
– The blockout needed tweaking.
– The details weren’t synchronizing.
Flipping it was the game-changer.
Suddenly, I had clarity and could see the unseen.
𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗜 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝗶𝘁:
1. Imported the image into Photoshop.
2. Flipped it horizontally.
3. Revisited the details with fresh eyes.
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁?
A better understanding of the design.
A cleaner render.
